In 1831 Hokusai created his famous series ‘Thirty-six view of Mount Fuji’ – this scene is from the east side of the mountain in what was known as Sagami Province during Hokusai’s lifetime. Within the series, the first 20 prints focus on the miraculous daily return of colour to the world with the rising of the sun. In the last 16 (including this print) he explored the effects of full daylight on the rural and urban landscape. Our new exhibition dedicated to the Japanese artist opens on 25 May – book tickets using the link in our bio. Umezawa Manor in Sagami Province from Thirty-six Views of Mt Fuji.
